Chapter Twelve

Five hours later, Jack stopped by Harvey’s house to pick up Chimi. Harvey was kind enough to watch the dog while Jack took Brian to the urgent care.

He knocked on the door and waited. Hopefully, it wasn’t too late, but it wasn’t like he could plan how long he’d be at the hospital. Who knew if Harvey was in bed by nine every night?

Jack knocked a little louder and rang the doorbell this time.

“Arf, arf, arf!”

Chimi’s bark got louder and louder as she ran to Harvey’s front door like she owned the place.

“Arf, arf, arf!”

Jack shook his head and waited. Penzance didn’t bark at all, which wasn’t a surprise. Nothing bothered that dog, not even an earthquake.

The door swung open and Chimi lunged onto the front porch, begging Jack to pick her up. “Okay, okay. Nice to see you, too. It wasn’t that long ago that I saw you.” Chimi licked Jack’s lips. He quickly wiped his mouth and shook his head. “When will you learn?”

Chimi wagged her tail, just happy to be in his arms.

Jack looked up to Harvey. “I didn’t wake you, did I?”

“Nah. You’ll notice when you get older you won’t need a lot of sleep.”

“I thought the idea of retirement was that you could sleep in all you want as a reward for working hard all your life.”

“Ha! The one thing you’ll find out about retirement is that you don’t have time for everything you want to do. Being retired is a full-time job.”

“So why should I look forward to getting old then?”

Harvey grinned. “Senior discounts at Denny’s and the movies, for starters.”

Jack chuckled. “Important stuff . . .” He gestured to Chimi. “Sorry to dump her on you like that at the last moment.”

Harvey reached over and petted Chimi again. “You know I don’t mind watching Chorizo. Anytime.”

Jack reached over, scratching Penzance on the head. “Hey, boy. Nice to see you.”

“Come in…” Harvey opened the door even farther and waved Jack through. “How was everything at the hospital? Is the boy okay?”

Jack stepped inside and closed the door behind him. “Yeah, he’s fine. Looks like just a slight ankle sprain. He needs to stay off it for a few days. He’ll be fine.”

“Good to hear.”

Jack shook his head in disgust. “That was all Susie’s fault. She should know better than that.”

“Have you ever made a mistake in your life?”

Jack chuckled. “Plenty.”

“Who hasn’t? Stuff happens. No need to go throwing blame around like a dart. That Susie is a smart woman and you know she didn’t do it on purpose.”

Jack couldn’t argue there.

“She probably already feels bad about what happened, so don’t go rubbing her nose in it.”

Jack chuckled again. “Okay . . . Good advice. I’ll try to remember that.”

Harvey picked up the remote and muted the television show he was watching—The Simpsons.

Jack pointed to the television. “I didn’t know you watched that show.”

Harvey nodded. “That Homer is a hoot, but he’s someone you can learn a lot from. He fails at just about everything he does in life, but keeps pressing forward.
